Hiking to Chopok from Srdiečko

The hike begins at the final bus stop near Hotel Srdiečko (1,205 m a.s.l.). Follow the yellow trail marking uphill past the mid-station of the Kosodrevina cable car to the turn-off to Chopok. The trail climbs steeply at first through dense dwarf pine before reaching the main ridge of the Low Tatras and the Kamenná Chata pod Chopkom – “Kamienka”, which was reconstructed and modernized between 2016–2018. From the hut, it only takes a few more moments to reach the Chopok summit, the third-highest peak of the Low Tatras after Ďumbier and Štiavnica. Its central position on the ridge makes it an excellent viewpoint. It lies between Dereše to the west and Ďumbier to the east and is one of the most visited peaks in Slovakia.

Chopok is one of those peaks that almost every hiker wants to complete. A beautiful 2,000-meter mountain with excellent views, easy access, the option to ride a cable car close to the summit, well-marked trails, and comfortable accommodation options makes it a highly attractive destination.

By cable car to Chopok

Chopok is among the Slovak peaks easily accessible by cable car. Lifts from Srdiečko and Jasná lead almost to the very top. The final meters must be covered on foot. Although cable car tickets can be pricey, it’s good to know that this option exists.

  • Starting point: Trangoška

The highest peak of the Low Tatras, Ďumbier (2,043 m), lies on the main ridge between Krúpova hoľa (1,927 m) and Králička (1,785 m). Its northern side forms a massive alpine wall with steep couloirs and ridges dropping into the glacial valleys of Bystrá and Ludárova dolina. The gentler southern slopes are covered with granite boulder fields.

In the past, the area was known for deposits of iron ore, gold, and andesite. During WWII, retreat battles between partisans and German forces took place at the saddle between Ďumbier and Králička. A memorial to the fallen partisans was built near the nearby Chata M. R. Štefánika to commemorate these events and the challenging winter crossing of the Low Tatras by partisans in 1944.

From the summit, you can enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the mountain ranges of central and northern Slovakia.

The shortest and most popular trail to Ďumbier starts from the southern side of the Low Tatras. It is also the most frequently used supply route for the M. R. Štefánik Hut, as it is still supplied traditionally by mountain porters.

The hike begins at Trangoška near a free parking lot. The trail starts next to the former NAPANT information centre. Follow the green-marked path for 2 km through Trangošská dolina to the junction for the Dead Bats Cave. Continue past the Halašova jama junction, where you’ll find a small memorial to skier Halaš, who died in an avalanche.

The final ascent to the Štefánik Hut is more demanding but rewards you with stunning mountain views. At the hut, you can rest on the terrace overlooking Mlynská dolina.

From the hut, continue along the red E8 trail (the Heroes of the SNP Route) with a gentle climb to Ďumbierske sedlo and then to the junction at Krúpovo sedlo (1.1 km). Here, take care not to miss the turnoff to the saddle, as the marking is partly covered by dwarf pine. A well-maintained trail leads up to Krúpovo sedlo, from where it is only a 30-minute ascent to the summit of Ďumbier, marked by a large double-armed cross. After enjoying the magnificent views, return to Krúpovo sedlo.
If you prefer not to return by the same route, you can continue along the ridge to Chopok (3.2 km). At Chopok, refresh yourself at the Rotunda or Kamenná chata and descend via the yellow-marked trail past the Kosodrevina hut to Srdiečko, returning to the starting point at Trangoška.

Route:

Trangoška (bus stop) – Trangošská dolina – Dolný salaš – Horný salaš (junction to Dead Bats Cave) – Halašova jama – Chata M. R. Štefánika – Ďumbierske sedlo – spring under Grúnik – junction to Krúpovo sedlo – Krúpovo sedlo – Ďumbier – Chopok – Kosodrevina – Srdiečko – Trangoška

The mountainous arc of the southern side of the Low Tatras hides thousands of natural wonders. If you are looking for a place where the fresh scents blend with the harmony of nature, head to the Vajskovská Valley, situated north of the village of Dolná Lehota, where the remarkable Vajskovský Waterfall awaits.

Your starting point can be the Črmné trail junction in Dolná Lehota. From there, follow the paved road lined with the Vajskovský stream toward the hunting lodge “Dve vody.” Near the lodge, the road branches in two directions: you can either visit the memorial in the Kulichova Valley commemorating the victims of an avalanche, or continue along the hiking trail toward our destination through Pálenice – the impressive nine-meter Vajskovský Waterfall.

With a gentle, easy ascent, you will reach your destination in approximately three hours, where you can enjoy the view of this cascading waterfall surrounded by deep forest — along with both refreshment and a touch of cold-water rejuvenation.

If you are searching for a place where fascinating natural phenomena meet historical landmarks, Horehronie offers several such locations. The Predajnianske Waterfalls and the Kelemen Tunnel near the villages of Predajná and Lopej are destinations that appeal not only to active hikers but also to cyclists.

This natural landmark attracts visitors not only with the two streams that form the Predajnianske Waterfalls but also with the surrounding rock fields and the beauty of its scenic landscape. Not far from the waterfalls, you will find a unique tunnel located on a forest road in Central Europe — the Kelemen or Čelniansky Tunnel, originally built in 1928 for transporting timber using horse-drawn wagons.

Your starting point can be the green-marked hiking trail from the village of Lopej. This easy route is especially appealing to families with children, whose curiosity drives them to discover new places — which you can also enjoy from your bicycle on the cycling trail “Popod Hrb až na Štopm.

The easy trail from Čertovica to Beňuška is a scenic route suitable even for families with children. It follows a forest road and grassy alpine meadows, offering beautiful views of the Low Tatras, Slovak Ore Mountains, and the Horehronie valley. At the end of the route, you will find the Líška shelter, a cosy spot ideal for a small break by the fire pit or even an overnight stay for hikers.

The route begins directly at the Čertovica saddle. After a 2 km ascent along a forest road, you join the red-marked trail toward the saddle behind Lenivá. Here, turn right onto the green-marked trail leading to Beňuška. After 1.7 km along a forest path and mountain trail, passing the Barbora shelter, you reach Beňuška. The summit itself is a stunning open plateau covered with wide grassy fields, rich in blueberries and alpine flowers. The views from here will surely take your breath away.

The trail continues along the green-marked ridge toward Kečka, where the path begins to descend. To your left, a charming wooden cabin — the Líška shelter — appears, opening up panoramic views of the Horehronie valley and its characteristic villages.

The shelter is usually open; its interior is very small, but it features an outdoor fire pit with a shelter, perfect for a snack and a bit of rest. From here, you can return the same way back to Čertovica, or you can rejoin the original route via the forest road behind the cabin, under the Beňuška peak.

The green-marked trail continues downhill (900 m) all the way to the village of Braväcovo, but due to logging and wind damage, some sections are difficult to pass.

  • Starting point: Zbojská

Jakub Surovec was an important Slovak outlaw who came from Tisovec. His life as a brigand began the moment he stole sheep — for which he was punished with 200 lashes. In 1739, he joined a band of outlaws, but just a year later he established his own group. His band operated mainly in the Horehronie region, but also in Poľko, Liptov, and in the counties of Novohrad and Zvolen. A lookout tower and an educational trail passing through Čertova dolina are named after this famous Slovak outlaw. Čertova dolina is a protected area in the eastern part of the Vepor Mountains and forms part of the Muránska Planina protected area.

The educational trail is 4.7 km long and of medium difficulty. It is accessible year-round, but only in one direction — upstream along the Furmanec stream. The starting point is located at the information center at the Zbojská shepherd’s hut, and the route partially follows the red-marked Rudná Magistrála. At the beginning of your journey, you can stop at the lookout tower built from wood and stone, offering magical views of the surrounding landscape. The trail continues across pastures to the edge of the forest, where the nature trail markings split off from the red trail and continue through a beech forest. You will pass an intersection leading to the Remeta Cave, about which you can learn from the educational board. As you gradually descend, you approach Čertova dolina. You will pass beneath the dominant Čertov Bridge, a part of the cog railway line connecting Tisovec and Brezno.

From the viaduct, it is only a short distance to the entrance of the Čertova Gorge. It was through this passage that the outlaw from Tisovec and his band fled from the noblemen’s gendarmes. After a short detour to the Čertova Cave, you arrive at the mouth of the stream. The cave once served as a hideout for Jakub Surovec’s band. It is 297 meters long and 30 meters high. The ascent through the gorge leads directly along the streambed, so waterproof footwear is recommended. Extra caution is needed when climbing the slippery ladders. After passing through the narrow gorge, the trail returns to Zbojnícky dvor across the Pacherky meadows and the shepherd’s hut in Galička.

The village of Jasenie is a mountain-edge settlement in the Low Tatras and also serves as a gateway to the 90 km-long main ridge trail of the Low Tatras. However, Jasenie also has lesser-known yet significant valleys rich in mineral springs and minerals — including one of our easy hiking routes.

The easy hike begins in the mountain-edge part of Jasenie, in Predsuchá, near the forester’s lodge. Here, you can follow the blue-marked trail leading all the way to the Low Tatras ridge.

However, our interest lies in the beauty of the Jasenianska Valley and a stop at Kyslá — a mineral spring that is one hour of walking away, with 230 m of elevation gain. After a refreshing pause, you can continue along the blue trail toward the Bauková crossroads. Here you will find a weir, which is part of the technical monument known as the Jasenie Cascade. It is almost one hundred years old and still functioning. The Jasenie Cascade is among the most extensive and significant technical monuments in Slovakia.

On the Jasenica stream above the village of Predajná lies a system of historic waterworks, which are part of a complex network of weirs, collection channels, reservoirs, basins, and power stations that begins deep in the Low Tatras valleys. Here, the weirs have been collecting mountain stream water since 1903 for the successful ironworks in Podbrezová. It is said that this was where the highest-quality railway tracks in Europe were produced. Already in the 18th century, the Hroniec complex was the most important iron production center in the entire Austro-Hungarian Empire. But as the industry grew, the energy from wood and water streams was no longer enough — and the era of electricity began.

The most eye-catching feature is the Rígeľ accumulation reservoir, located at almost 730 meters above sea level, about 200 meters above the Jasenie power plant. If you look closely, you can even see it from the main road between Banská Bystrica and Brezno. It is supplied with water through long underground mining tunnels. The tunnel from the Bauková weir is 8 km long and has a diameter of 1,000 mm. It winds along the slope above the valley. A system of smaller channels collects additional water from nearby streams into the underground tunnel. If the channel overflows, the water drains back out. Because four mills and a sawmill once operated lower along the Jasenica stream, in 1938 the ironworks built an equalizing reservoir below the power plant with a capacity of around 10,000 cubic meters. This is where our route ends. For less experienced hikers, we recommend returning to the village of Jasenie. However, for skilled hikers with proper equipment, we highly recommend continuing toward the Ďurková hut and shelter on the Low Tatras ridge, heading toward Chabenec or completing a loop via Zámotská hoľa.

A forest path from the recreational area of Tále guides you through the magical landscape of the true Low Tatras forests directly to the popular Krpáčovo Lake, where you can refresh yourself and even recharge your e-bike at Hotel Polianka above the lake. For passionate water enthusiasts, we recommend renting a paddleboard at the hotel and enjoying a relaxing break on the lake! After a rest, the route continues past the Sama Chalupka spring, through the largest archaeological site in the Horehronie region – “Hrádok,” a protected cultural monument from the Late Bronze Age. You then pass by the first championship golf course in Tále.

The route starts in the recreational area (Hotel Stupka), from where you climb gently along an asphalt road and turn toward Hotel Golf. There, you join the green cycle route 5552, which overlaps with the “Partisan Trail” hiking path and follows an unpaved gravel road for 3.7 km to Hotel Polianka above Krpáčovo Lake (note: from the lake you must return to the crossroads near Hotel Polianka).

From Hotel Polianka, continue left along the yellow cycle route 8554 on a gravel surface with a gentle descent. After 800 meters, you reach a crossroads where you may turn to the Sama Chalupka spring to taste the water, then return to the route. Continue down the Hnusné Valley on the yellow route 8554 to the crossroads at Hrádok.

Here, turn left and follow the green cycle route 5552. Continue for 4 km, passing through the Tále Ski Center until you reach the main road at the Tálska Kúria. Turn left and follow the main road toward Chopok Juh for 1.2 km, then turn left at the marked junction toward Hotel Stupka. Alternatively, from Tálska Kúria, continue just 500 m along the main road and turn left toward the Ski & Golf Resort Tále. Follow the asphalt road for 700 m, then turn right onto a paved service road between cottages leading to the Tále water reservoir.

(Near the shepherd’s hut below the transmitter, you may shorten the route by turning right through a small forest and under the cable car toward Dedečkova Chata. However, we recommend climbing to the transmitter for breathtaking views of Brezno and the Slovenské Rudohorie mountain range, with a perfect open-air rest area and fire pit.) From the transmitter, continue along the ridge meadow road for 500 m, then turn right downhill to Dedečkova Chata, where refreshments are available.
You then need to return 300 m uphill to the ridge meadow and continue descending along the blue cycle route 2554 to Lazná Saddle. To the Highest Cycling Point in Slovakia
Cycling to the highest bike-accessible point in Slovakia — and even in Central Europe — is a demanding adventure, but the reward is unforgettable views you won’t regret. Majestic Kráľova hoľa is called the “mother of four rivers” because four rivers originate under its massive slopes: Hornád, Hnilec, Čierny Váh, and Hron. The mountain is wrapped in legends and songs, and it was once a favorite hunting ground of King Matthias Corvinus — hence the name “Kráľova” (“King’s”). Since 1960 a transmission tower has stood on its summit, and thanks to it, the access road was built — today a magnet for high-mountain cyclists. Kráľova hoľa is known for strong gusty winds — do not underestimate warm clothing for the long downhill ride.
Respect the rules of the Low Tatras National Park. Stay on marked routes and do not ride past the “no cycling” sign at the end of the asphalt section near the transmitter. If you do not feel physically prepared for this demanding climb on a standard bike, you can rent an e-bike in Šumiac or at other rental points in the region.

Turn left and join the blue route 2569, which leads through forest and meadows across Obrubovanec (1020 m), to Zákľuky (1012 m), and further along the blue route to the Danková junction.

From Danková, you can turn left and follow the yellow trail 8584, which reconnects one valley further at the Hronček water reservoir with the red trail 013. From here, continue through Kamenistá Valley all the way to the village of Hronec. At the point Sv. Ján, you may take a right turn and follow the green trail 5571 through Čierny Balog to the area Nový Krám, where you can rejoin the main road leading towards Brezno.

Route variations

Another option is to continue left along the green trail 5571 directly to the village of Hronec, all the way to the town square. From there, continue along the main road to the railway crossing, then turn right up a gently steep hill towards the village of Valaská. Continue straight through a wide bend, descend to another railway crossing, cross the bridge, and then turn right onto the main road heading to Brezno.

For extra demanding cyclists, choose an alternative after passing Hronček: at the point Endreska, turn left onto the green trail 5551 towards Štomp, following the valley deeper. Upon reaching the summit Na Štompe, take a right turnonto the blue trail 2572, which leads to the point Štomp lúka. From here, you can turn right and follow the yellow trail 8637 over or beneath Hájny grúň to the village of Hronec.
If you turn left instead, continue along the blue trail 2572 into the next valley and arrive in the village of Osrblie.

Right at the beginning of the village you can enjoy a local craft beer at Hotel Zerrenpach, located next to the biathlon stadium.

The Čiernohronská Forest Railway is a narrow-gauge railway dating back to 1908. Originally built for transporting timber from the valleys of the Čierny Hron basin, it was nearly dismantled in 1985. Thanks to dedicated volunteers, it was saved and transformed into a national cultural monument—today one of the region’s most beloved attractions.

The railway runs daily during the summer tourist season (2 July – 30 September) 5. from the central station in Čierny Balog in three directions: Vydrovo, Dobroč, and Šánske. 9. The fleet includes several steam and diesel locomotives and historic open-air carriages—especially enjoyable on warm summer days. Special rides can be booked in advance.

While in Čierny Balog, don’t miss the open-air Forestry Museum in the Vydrovská Valley, the primeval Dobročský Forest, or the Pustý vrch lookout tower.
In winter, enjoy skiing at Ski Čierny Balog or experience the traditional carnival festival Už sa fašiang kráti.

On a hill at the edge of the Low Tatras rises Slovenská Ľupča Castle, a national cultural monument overlooking the village since the 13th century.

Throughout its long history, it passed from the Arpads to noble families such as Matúš Čák of Trenčín and knight Donč. It survived a major 15th-century earthquake, the turbulent 16th century under the Dóczy family, and 17th-century uprisings.
In the 18th century, the castle served as a prison, and in the 19th century additional manor buildings were added. The 20th century brought wartime damage and later agricultural use.
Since 2002, Železiarne Podbrezová has been restoring the castle.

Visits from September to July are possible only on weekdays upon prior booking by phone or email, with a minimum group of four visitors.

The only accessible high-mountain cave located in the heart of the Low Tatras ridge, around 6,000 years old, was named after speleologists discovered hundreds of thousands of bat bones inside. Would you like to see the largest bat burial site yourself? Set out to explore the Dead Bats Cave!

The cave lies beneath Ďumbier, the highest peak of the Low Tatras, and is easily accessible from the mountain hut Trangoška, where you can park your car. If you have booked your visit by phone in advance and are warmly and appropriately dressed, you can continue on foot for two kilometres along a marked hiking trail. It leads directly to a small cabin that serves as the entrance to the mysterious underground world of the cave.

The cave offers several guided tour routes designed for different visitor groups, but the most popular one—especially for families with children—is Route A. It is one kilometre long, takes approximately 1.5 hours, and features rocky paths secured with rope-supported railings. Combine a healthy walk through the forest with an underground adventure in a cave that is said to be home to a mysterious, furry Yeti.

Dobroč Primeval Forest, symbolising mystery and untouched nature, is a national nature reserve and one of the oldest primeval forest reserves in Slovakia, protected under the highest (5th) level of conservation. It is located within the Čierny Balog forest district in the Brôtovo Valley, about six kilometres beyond the village part of Dobroč.

When the reserve was freely accessible, increasing visitor numbers led to the disturbance of its rare flora and fauna. These were the main reasons for restricting access to this small, ecologically sensitive area.

Entry is free for forestry and environmentally oriented expert groups. For the general public, access is permitted only with a pre-booked guide who will lead you through forest complexes into protected zones enriched with information panels.

The Forestry Open-Air Museum is a living museum in nature. Along the more than 4 km long “Forest Time Trail”, there are currently 84 stops featuring fascinating exhibits and natural forest habitats that offer insightful views into the life-giving power of the forest. You will also enjoy vivid scenes from the history, present and future of forestry.

The creation of the museum is a practical response to many questions raised by the public about the country’s greatest natural treasure. Since seeing once is better than hearing ten times, the museum allows you to explore the wide context of forestry work directly within forest stands.

A powerful addition to the area is the collection of natural artworks created by an international group of artists known as Ekoart. Since 2009, visitors can also return to the village centre via the Čierny Balog educational trail, which begins at the end of the car park and ends at the Municipal Office.

The museum continues to expand every year. We hope you will always find something new here – perhaps even thanks to your ideas and feedback. We are truly looking forward to your visit!

Access: by car, bus, on foot, or via the Čiernohronská Forest Railway.

CITY TOWER

The City Tower is one of the city’s younger landmark buildings, serving as a belfry and watchtower. It is the third tower built for this purpose; its predecessors stood in different parts of the square. They were constructed from available materials – mostly wood with stone foundations – which made them vulnerable to fire and the passage of time. Remaining materials were often repurposed for other buildings. 20. The foundation stone of the current tower was laid in 1830, near the site of the city’s first church. It underwent restoration at the turn of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Proof of the original foundation stone is still visible today – just look up and take a closer look.

TRIBUTE TO M. R. ŠTEFÁNIK

From every floor of the tower, you can enjoy a view of the monumental statue of M. R. Štefánik. The idea to build the statue was conceived a century ago. To enhance the promenade where many people strolled on Sundays, the city decided in 1923 to commemorate M. R. Štefánik with a statue in the park, which at that time contained no monuments. The 10th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia became the ideal occasion for its unveiling. Discover the dramatic destiny of the statue, its place in the city’s memory, and how it connected Brezno with a foreign city considered almost a second home by Štefánik. All this awaits you on the third floor of the tower.

THE BELLS

The bells called the people of Brezno to prayer, signalled danger and announced fires. They warned of threats to the city – yet they were themselves threatened by fires and wars, during which they were often melted down into cannons. A tragic event from 1779 is still preserved in the inscription on the largest bell. Visit the trio of bells up close, learn their story, discover messages from the past, and appreciate the craftsmanship of carpenters and bell-makers. Stand in the very “heart” of the belfry and discover its soul.

BELL KEEPER’S APARTMENT

They viewed the world from above without pride, lived in majestic yet humble surroundings, and carried great responsibility despite lacking formal education. Such were the bell keepers of Brezno. They climbed nearly a hundred stairs several times a day – not only to ring the bells but also because the tower was their home. On the top floor, they lived with their families, their presence signalled by smoke rising from the chimney. Climb to the bell keeper’s room and step into the role of its former inhabitants. Discover the city from a bird’s-eye perspective, in a way impossible from the ground.

Winter activities

One of the most famous resorts in the Horehronie region is located in the Low Tatras below the southern slopes of Chopok at an altitude of 660 – 870 m above sea level. m

  • Smooth slope operation is ensured by 6 lifts with a capacity of 4,110 people per hour.
  • Skiers have at their disposal precisely maintained trails for demanding and less demanding skiers, as well as a slope reserved for beginner skiers. The total length of the tracks 2.77 km is artificially snowed.
  • During the traditional night skiing, three ski lifts are available: H-100, TLV-A and TLV-C.

The Horehronie region offers high-quality active winter relaxation not only in modern ski resorts. Cross-country skiing enthusiasts will appreciate approximately 80 km of professionally groomed trails and endless snowy meadows that provide excellent conditions throughout the entire winter season, often lasting until spring.

In the scenic surroundings of the Gray Bear golf course, several cross-country loops are regularly groomed during the winter season when snow conditions permit.

Chopok is undoubtedly one of the most visited peaks in the Low Tatras. It attracts athletes even in winter, offering rewarding ascents on ski-touring skis. This mountain—whose slopes host the largest ski resort in Slovakia, Jasná— combines the comfort of top-quality services with the raw, untamed nature of the surrounding ski-touring area and freeride zones.

Detailed Route Description

From the southern side of Chopok, visitors can reach the summit via the official ski-touring route starting from Krupová (1,064 m a.s.l.), ascending through the ski resort to Zadné Dereše (1,500 m a.s.l.). The trail begins with a gentle climb along a forest path before joining the ski slope and continuing along its edge. The ascent to Zadné Dereše is moderately steep; in icy conditions, ski-touring kick-turn techniques may be required on a short section. From Zadné Dereše, the route follows the edge of red slope no. 35, connecting to blue slope 34C. When crossing to the opposite side of the slope, be cautious and avoid collisions with skiers descending the red slope. The ascent along the blue slope is very pleasant. The switchbacks offer stunning views, reaching as far as Klenovský Vepor in good weather. After the switchbacks, a long gently rising section leads towards Rotunda and the Kamenná chata mountain hut. The climb takes approximately 2 hours, depending on fitness level. The descent can be enjoyed on various ski slopes or freeride lines.

Another route to the top follows the southern side ridge through Sedlo Príslop to Dereše, along the yellow hiking trail. The trail begins in the forest near a small side parking area located on the left side before entering the main Krupová car park. It follows the stream with a gentle gradient through mixed forest. After the stream ends, several steeper kick-turn sections lead to the yellow trail, roughly halfway between Pálenica and Sedlo Príslop. The ridge section through dwarf-pine vegetation offers beautiful views before a final steeper ascent to Dereše.

The southern ski-touring area stretches below the main ridge from Dereše, across Chopok, Krúpova hoľa, and Ďumbier to the Štefánikova hut. It also includes the ski-touring corridor around the Chata pod Ďumbierom (Kozie chrbty ridge and the upper part of the Zelenská Mlynná valley). The southern boundary leads through the Trangoška valley and Halašova jama to Trangoška and Srdiečko. From Srdiečko it continues via the Krupová ski slope to the Krupová valley, then climbs to the main ridge (blue trail) all the way to Sedlo Príslop, where the Dereše ridge reaches the main axis of the Low Tatras.
